A water storage tank is the lifeblood of any fire sprinkler system and it is essential that the tank is regularly inspected to detect any faults that could lead to catastrophic failure.
The Fire Protection Agency (FPA) technical bulletin, TB203 states that a fire sprinkler tank should be internally inspected every 2-years using an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The tank should also be inspected externally, along with an ultrasonic thickness inspection to monitor any degradation of the tank walls.
Once the tank reaches 10-years from the original installation date, the FPA states that the tank must be drained down, inspected and cleaned before refilling.
